TMT (Treadmill Test)

TMT (Treadmill Test)

Exercise stress ECG on a motorised treadmill to evaluate cardiac response under increasing workload — a key test for coronary artery disease.

Overview

The Treadmill Test (TMT), also known as an Exercise Stress Test or Stress ECG, monitors the heart's electrical activity, blood pressure and symptoms while the patient walks on a motorised treadmill at progressively increasing speeds and inclines. It is one of the most important tests for diagnosing coronary artery disease (CAD) and evaluating exercise tolerance.

At Dr. Anand's Diagnostic, TMT is performed in a fully equipped cardiac room by trained staff under the direct supervision of a cardiologist. Emergency resuscitation equipment is available throughout the procedure, ensuring complete safety.

What We Do

TMT is indicated for evaluation of chest pain, breathlessness on exertion, palpitations, suspected coronary artery disease, assessment of exercise tolerance, post-angioplasty or bypass surgery follow-up, and pre-operative cardiac risk stratification. We use the standard Bruce protocol with modifications available for high-risk patients.

Key Highlights
  • Standard Bruce protocol

  • Continuous 12-lead ECG monitoring

  • Blood pressure monitoring

  • Cardiologist supervised

Frequently Asked Questions

Wear comfortable walking shoes and clothing. Avoid a heavy meal for at least 3 hours before the test. Continue your heart medications unless your doctor advises otherwise. Bring all previous ECGs and reports.

TMT is a safe procedure performed under medical supervision with emergency equipment on standby. It is not performed if there are contraindications such as unstable angina, severe hypertension or acute cardiac events. Your physician will assess your suitability before the test.

You will walk on a treadmill while electrodes monitor your ECG. Speed and incline increase every 3 minutes. The test is stopped when you reach the target heart rate, develop symptoms, or show significant ECG changes. The whole process takes about 30–45 minutes.
