Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT) measures how well the lungs work — their ability to hold air and move it in and out. Spirometry, the most common component, measures airflow rates and volumes by asking the patient to breathe forcefully into a mouthpiece connected to a spirometer.
At Dr. Anand's Diagnostic, PFT is performed by trained respiratory technicians using computerised spirometry systems. The test is essential for diagnosing asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), restrictive lung diseases and monitoring treatment response. It is also used for pre-operative pulmonary risk assessment.
We perform spirometry (FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC, PEF), flow-volume loop analysis, bronchodilator reversibility testing and pre-operative respiratory assessment. The results are automatically compared against predicted values based on age, sex and height, and reported by our respiratory physicians.
Avoid smoking for at least 4 hours before the test. Do not use inhaler bronchodilators for 4–6 hours (short-acting) or 12 hours (long-acting) before the test unless your doctor advises otherwise. Wear loose, comfortable clothing and avoid a heavy meal immediately before.
PFT requires maximum effort breathing manoeuvres that can feel slightly strenuous but are not painful. Patients with severe breathlessness may find it tiring. The test is usually completed within 20–30 minutes.
PFT is recommended for patients with chronic cough, wheezing, breathlessness, suspected asthma or COPD, occupational lung disease, and before major surgery. It is also used for pre-employment and insurance medicals.
